Gun Enhancement Charges Can Add Years To Your Sentence

In Florida, if you are convicted of using a gun in the commission of a crime, you may face additional penalties. For example, if a gun is used in a drug trafficking crime, you could face up to 15 years in prison as opposed to five years.

In cases involving violent crime, gun enhancement penalties can also add years to your prison sentence. In general, when a gun is involved in the commission of a crime, the following sentencing enhancements apply:

• Brandishing or carrying a gun can add up to 10 years in prison
• Killing or injuring someone with a gun results in a life sentence (with the possible exception of self-defense cases under Florida's new " stand your ground" law)
• Aiming or firing a gun in the commission of a crime can add up to 20 additional years of prison time.
