Woman arrested, charged with drunk driving

One female firefighter was recently arrested for drinking and driving in Florida. The woman arrested on drunk driving charges has thus been placed on administrative leave. Her arrest took place on a Tuesday night.

The 45-year-old woman is said to have caused a head-on crash a little bit before 8 p.m. Police said the woman drove east into the lanes going west. That is when she crashed her sport utility vehicle into another sport utility vehicle. No injuries were cited for people in the sport utility vehicle that was struck by the woman.

The woman suffered minor scratches and scrapes on the knees, arms, and hands. She reportedly told police that the accident occurred while she was going home after having consumed a couple of vodka Red Bulls at a nearby bar. Police said when they saw her, they noticed that her eyes were glassy, her breath had an alcoholic smell, and she had incoherent and slurred speech. She now faces charges of driving under the influence, refusing to take a breath test, and driving under the influence with property damage, all misdemeanors.

The woman arrested on drunk driving charges is presumed innocent until and unless her guilt is proved beyond a reasonable doubt in criminal court. This standard exists so as to prevent innocent individuals from being found guilty of criminal acts they did not perform. Instead of going to trial to fight the charges, the Florida woman may decide to plea bargain with the prosecution, which may lead to a lighter sentence than what she would receive following a guilty verdict at trial.
