Aggravated assault charge in Zimmerman shooting

Many Florida readers are familiar with the name George Zimmerman, and the media frenzy that surrounded the incident in which Zimmerman shot and killed an unarmed black teenager named Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman was back in the news in recent days after a man fired a weapon at him on the side of a Florida roadway. In the recent case, Zimmerman is not the suspect; he is being portrayed as the victim of an aggravated assault.

Police have determined that Zimmerman and the other individual were involved in a previous altercation last fall. At that time, the two men had an argument over an incident in which the man changed lanes while driving, forcing Zimmerman out of his lane of travel. The man later called police to report that Zimmerman was parked outside of the man's place of employment, but no charges were filed in the matter.

In the recent incident, police believe that the two men met by chance along an area roadway. It is unclear what series of events led to the shooting, but police have determined that the man fired a gun into Zimmerman's vehicle. Both men were armed at the time of the incident, but both were legally in possession of their firearms.

The Florida man has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, as well as firing a missile into an occupied vehicle. However, as the matter moves forward, additional information may be made available. George Zimmerman has a long history that suggests a propensity for violence and a quick temper, and it is not beyond the realm of possibility that the interaction between the two men was not as one-sided as these criminal charges might suggest.
