Domestic argument leads to serious charge for Volusia County man

It is no secret that family arguments can get out of control, and sometimes police are called to the scene to investigate. A Volusia County man is facing a serious criminal charge after a recent argument with his stepson. Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured in the altercation.

Late in the evening on May 25, a 36-year-old man was involved in a car wreck in Volusia County. He went to the home of his 67-year-old stepfather, and an argument ensued. The stepfather told law enforcement that his stepson was intoxicated and being disrespectful, and the younger man reportedly refused to leave the home when told to do so.

The older man claims that he called his wife and asked her to deal with her son, but she was not able to handle the situation at the time. The stepfather allegedly went into his bedroom and retrieved a .22 caliber pistol filled with bird shot. He reportedly fired a warning shot in the kitchen of the home. When the stepson turned toward him after hearing the shot, the older man allegedly fired two more times, hitting the stepson in the chest.

The injured man was eventually taken by his mother to a local hospital where it was reported that he only suffered minor injuries.

After the shooting, the older man called for emergency assistance and was subsequently taken into custody without incident. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder with a firearm. The man's 9-year-old grandson was reported to be a witness to the incident.

Anyone accused of such a serious crime should have a strong criminal defense. Domestic arguments can be complex matters to investigate, especially if questions of self-defense arise. You can learn more about gun-related allegations at our criminal defense website.
