Zombies Against Drunk Driving scares up publicity to fight DUI

You read that right -- a group of self-described “concerned, recently-deceased citizens” has founded a safety organization called Zombies Against Drunk Driving, or ZADD, that is “rising up against drunk driving.”

The group operates only in Utah at the moment, but this is the second year members have teamed up with law enforcement to scare “the bajeebees” out of potential drunk drivers -- and to remind celebrants of how a DUI arrest or car accident could make a shambles of your Halloween.

"When drivers fail to be responsible, those few glasses of alcohol can quickly turn a fun evening into a scary nightmare,” said a spokesperson for the highway patrol.

The zombies have a pretty direct way of demonstrating that fact. Actors from the group dress as the zombies of drunk-driving-accident victims and team up with law enforcement to make their point with a humorous twist. This works out well, officers commented, because the events allow them to interact with people who often fear them for quite a different reason.

Here in central Florida, be aware that law enforcement is operating more DUI patrols and sobriety checkpoints all this week. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Halloween can a deadly period for drunk driving. In 2010, the agency says, 41 percent of all traffic deaths in the nation occurred during the week surrounding Halloween.

The Winter Park Police Department, although lacking zombies, offers these reminders:

  • Plan your safe way home before you begin celebrating.
  • Designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home.
  • If you are intoxicated and don’t have a designated driver, call a taxi or a sober friend, or take public transportation.

The zombies add their own inimitable advice:

“This Halloween, if you've been drinking, please don't drive. Take a cab. Ride with a sober friend. Or better yet, walk home, alone and unarmed, through a graveyard.”
